Lawmakers launch public consultation on new Penal Code

Santo Domingo.- The Chamber of Deputies approved on Tuesday the launch of a public consultation process to gather proposals for amendments to the new Penal Code before it takes effect on August 3.

Chamber President Alfredo Pacheco said lawmakers will receive recommendations from various sectors of society and could hold public hearings to address concerns over specific provisions. He noted that no deadline has been set for submitting proposals, although legislators hope to review potential changes during the current legislative session, which ends on July 26. Pacheco acknowledged, however, that the consultation process could extend beyond that date if additional time is needed.

Pacheco also clarified that the review will not reopen debate on the three legal grounds for abortion, saying the issue was extensively discussed during the years-long process of approving the new Penal Code. Instead, any proposed amendments will focus on other provisions that have drawn public criticism or concern.
