OMSA to launch electric bus corridor in Santo Domingo’s Colonial City

Santo Domingo.- The Metropolitan Bus Services Operator (OMSA) will introduce a new 100% electric bus corridor in Santo Domingo’s Colonial City as part of efforts to improve mobility and support the revitalization of the historic district.

The OMSA Colonial project will feature five electric buses, each with capacity for 22 passengers, operating along a 12.5-kilometer route that will connect key streets in the Colonial City with the Plaza de la Cultura and nearby Santo Domingo Metro stations.

The system will include between 30 and 35 accessible stops located throughout and around the historic center, with accommodations for people with reduced mobility and wheelchair users. OMSA said the buses will be driven by women as part of an employment inclusion initiative.

New bus shelters already installed on streets such as Las Mercedes, Las Damas, Hostos, and Arzobispo Nouel are part of the upcoming corridor.

According to OMSA, the quiet, zero-emission vehicles will help preserve the environment and atmosphere of the Colonial City while encouraging greater use of public transportation. The project forms part of a broader revitalization program that has included underground electrical wiring, improved sidewalks and lighting, and the restoration of public spaces throughout the historic district.
