Public Health expands rapid tuberculosis testing with two new GeneXpert systems
Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Public Health has strengthened the country’s tuberculosis detection capacity by adding two new GeneXpert molecular diagnostic systems to the National Health Service (SNS), increasing the public network’s total to 36 devices nationwide.
The new equipment, acquired through an investment of RD$3.38 million, can diagnose tuberculosis within hours and quickly identify drug-resistant cases, allowing patients to begin treatment sooner and helping reduce disease transmission.
Health Minister Víctor Atallah said expanding access to advanced diagnostic technology is key to improving early detection and advancing the country’s goal of eliminating tuberculosis. Authorities noted that the nationwide network of 36 GeneXpert systems will improve access to rapid, high-precision testing across the country.
The initiative forms part of the government’s strategy to strengthen prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up services in line with the World Health Organization’s tuberculosis elimination targets.
