TNR and Intabaco partner to modernize Dominican tobacco farming
Santo Domingo.- The National Irrigation Technology Directorate (TNR) and the Tobacco Institute of the Dominican Republic (Intabaco) have signed a cooperation agreement to modernize tobacco production by expanding irrigation technology, technical assistance, and farmer training.
The initiative aims to increase crop productivity, improve water efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and promote sustainable growth in one of the country’s leading agricultural export industries.
Under the agreement, TNR will provide technical support and training on the installation, operation, and maintenance of pressurized irrigation systems, while Intabaco will help connect producers with training opportunities, financing, and subsidy programs. The institutions also plan to establish demonstration plots to showcase the benefits of modern irrigation and evaluate its impact on tobacco yields and quality.
Officials said the partnership will strengthen the competitiveness of the Dominican tobacco sector, which generates more than US$1.3 billion in annual exports, while encouraging wider adoption of innovative and sustainable farming practices.
