Remittances to Dominican Republic top US$6.2 billion through June

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic received more than US$6.219 billion in remittances during the first six months of 2026, a 6.7% increase compared with the same period last year, according to the Central Bank (BCRD).

In June alone, remittances reached US$1.049 billion, up 13.6% year-over-year, marking a stronger pace than the 10.6% growth recorded in May.

The Central Bank said the increase came despite a challenging global environment marked by tensions in the Middle East, which have fueled higher oil prices, inflationary pressures, and reduced household purchasing power.

The United States remained the primary source of remittances, accounting for 81.4% of formal transfers received in June, or US$780.7 million. Spain ranked second with US$61.8 million (6.4% of the total), followed by Italy (1.3%), while Haiti and Switzerland each contributed 1.2%. Additional remittance flows originated from countries including France, Canada, and Germany.

This is being touted as a good thing but in reality it means that more of the Dominican economy is being supported by outside donations outside of its control. This is not the same as internal growth which provides much greater stability from external shocks.
