Dominican Republic hands CIS presidency to Belize

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic officially transferred the Pro Tempore Presidency of the Central American Social Integration Council (CIS) to Belize during the body’s 83rd ordinary meeting, where member states also approved the Secretariat for Central American Social Integration’s (SISCA) Institutional Strategic Plan for 2027-2029.

Geanilda Vásquez, general coordinator of the Social Policy Coordination Cabinet, represented the Dominican Republic during its January-June 2026 presidency and formally handed over leadership to Belizean representative Thea García Ramírez.

During its six-month term, the Dominican Republic promoted regional initiatives focused on adaptive social protection, care systems, food security, a culture of peace, and preparedness for climate-related challenges. Belize pledged to continue advancing the regional agenda through stronger political dialogue, evidence-based public policies, and greater cooperation among member states.

The council also reviewed SISCA’s institutional progress, approved its 2027-2029 strategic plan, discussed the impacts of the El Niño climate phenomenon, examined El Salvador’s National Care System, and adopted new measures aimed at strengthening regional coordination on social policy and sustainable development
