INDEX celebrates Dominican Heritage Week in Puerto Rico
San Juan, Puerto Rico.- The Institute of Dominicans Abroad (INDEX) concluded the second edition of Dominican Heritage Week in Puerto Rico, promoting Dominican culture, identity, and integration while recognizing the contributions of the Dominican community on the island.
Led by Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs for Dominican Communities Abroad and INDEX Executive Director Celinés Toribio, the weeklong program brought together government officials, cultural leaders, academics, and members of the diaspora. The opening ceremony at La Fortaleza was attended by Puerto Rico Governor Jenniffer González Colón, who reaffirmed support for initiatives that strengthen ties between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
The event featured cultural, educational, community, and sporting activities, including recognition of outstanding Dominicans in Puerto Rico, university outreach programs, children’s workshops, panel discussions, the signing of a cooperation agreement between INDEX and Caribbean Cinemas, and a special screening of the Dominican film Teacher Mechy.
The celebration concluded at La Placita de Santurce, where hundreds of Dominicans and Puerto Ricans gathered to enjoy music, folklore, traditional costumes, and cultural performances, reinforcing the longstanding friendship between the two Caribbean nations.
