Northern Aid: The main social assistance programs available in the Dominican Republic

The United States Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, Leah Francis Campos, stated that the bilateral relationship is going through one of its best moments, marked by cooperation in security, trade, and shared values.

During a special interview broadcast on CDN, the diplomat highlighted a “healthy environment of freedom of expression” in the country, while stressing that it must be exercised responsibly.

Campos highlighted the warmth and patriotism of Dominicans, comparing them to the American people, and defended the priority the Trump administration has given to the region. However, his statements on sensitive issues have generated public debate.

These included the announcement of agreements for orderly deportations of irregular migrants, the closure of the USAID agency for “deviation of objectives,” and the proposal to stabilize Haiti using UN forces.

The diplomat also warned about China’s influence in the region and defended Christian values and the right to life, while clarifying that she would not interfere in internal Dominican debates. Regarding security, she reiterated that drug trafficking is a national security problem for the U.S. and reaffirmed the commitment to joint training and operations with local authorities.

The reactions were swift. While pro-government sectors praised cooperation on security and democracy, critics questioned the stance on Haiti and the closure of aid programs, citing potential impacts on vulnerable communities. Other analysts interpreted his statements on values and sovereignty as an attempt to influence the agenda in domestic social debates.
