Experts urge stronger building safety to reduce earthquake risk in the Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo.- Structural engineering, risk management, and insurance experts called for stronger building safety standards and greater earthquake preparedness in the Dominican Republic during the forum “Seismic Vulnerability and Structural Safety in the Dominican Republic,” organized by the Technological Institute of Santo Domingo (INTEC) with support from MARSH and MAPFRE.
The discussion brought together academics, insurance professionals, and infrastructure specialists to examine the country’s seismic risks and identify measures to improve the resilience of buildings and critical infrastructure.
INTEC experts Luis Abbott and Dr. Claudia Germoso emphasized the importance of evaluating structural vulnerability, implementing earthquake-resistant design, and ensuring compliance with building codes to minimize damage and save lives during seismic events.
Participants agreed that prevention, scientific research, technical training, and resilient infrastructure are essential to strengthening the country’s preparedness for future earthquakes. The forum forms part of INTEC’s ongoing efforts to promote disaster risk reduction and sustainable development through research, education, and institutional cooperation.
