Dominican Republic reports 171 dengue cases in 2026 as incidence declines

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic has recorded 171 dengue cases so far in 2026 after nine new infections were confirmed during epidemiological week 26, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

Health officials said the country has an incidence rate of 3.10 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, an 8% decrease compared with the same period last year. The ministry added that dengue activity remains within the expected range and below historical levels.

The latest epidemiological bulletin also confirmed one new case of leptospirosis, bringing the total to 179 cases, while no new cholera or malaria cases were reported. Malaria cases remain at 104 for the year, reflecting a significant long-term decline in incidence.

The report recorded five maternal deaths during the week, increasing the 2026 total to 68, while 24 infant deaths were reported, bringing the cumulative total to 795, down from 896 during the same period in 2025.

Ahead of World Brain Day on July 22, the Ministry of Public Health also urged citizens to prioritize mental and brain health, noting that up to 45% of dementia cases could be prevented, delayed, or treated by addressing modifiable risk factors early. The ministry highlighted the availability of its free “Take Care of Your Mental Health” hotline, accessible by dialing 711, which provides confidential psychological support and crisis intervention.
