Dominican Republic calls for faster deployment of Haiti security force

New York.- Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez urged the United Nations Security Council to renew the mandate of the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) and the UN Support Office in Haiti, while calling for the full implementation of existing international measures to help restore security in the neighboring country.

Addressing the Security Council, Álvarez welcomed progress made under UN Resolution 2793, including the establishment of the multinational force, its command structure, and the start of operations. He called for the rapid deployment of additional personnel and urged countries with strategic airlift capabilities to provide logistical support.

The foreign minister stressed that restoring security is essential for Haiti’s democratic recovery, stating that “security will make elections possible,” and reaffirmed the Dominican Republic’s support for free, inclusive, and credible elections.

Álvarez also called for the full enforcement of UN Resolution 2653, urging stronger sanctions not only against gang leaders but also against those who finance criminal groups, facilitate arms trafficking, launder illicit funds, or provide political and material support.

He emphasized that while the international force can help regain control of territory, lasting stability depends on strengthening Haiti’s National Police, judicial system, and other state institutions.

The Dominican Republic reaffirmed its support for renewing the international mission, prioritizing the force’s full deployment, stricter enforcement of the arms embargo and sanctions regime, and continued efforts to reinforce Haitian institutions.
