Canadian wildfire smoke to impact air quality in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Meteorological analyst Jean Suriel warned that air quality in the Dominican Republic is expected to deteriorate over the coming days due to a combination of smoke from Canadian wildfires and a new Saharan dust plume.

According to Suriel, smoke from the Canadian fires has been pushed into the Caribbean by a trough extending from the North Atlantic, increasing the likelihood of allergic reactions as it spreads across the country.

He said the trough and moist winds are expected to bring periods of rain to the Central Mountain Range, the southeast, northeast, and northwest. On Thursday, the trough and the approach of Tropical Wave No. 29 could trigger more widespread showers and thunderstorms, while the Canadian smoke is expected to gradually move away.

However, Suriel warned that the 12th Saharan dust cloud of the season is forecast to arrive on Friday and linger through Sunday, bringing hazy skies, hotter temperatures, and conditions that may aggravate allergies and respiratory problems.
