Dominican Republic reaffirms road safety commitment at UN General Assembly

New York.- The Dominican Republic reaffirmed its commitment to reducing traffic fatalities during the United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Road Safety, where Intrant Executive Director Milton Morrison outlined the government’s initiatives to improve road safety nationwide.

Speaking before the assembly, Morrison said road safety remains a national priority supported by public policies, institutional partnerships, and investments aimed at protecting lives. He noted that 2,992 people died in traffic accidents in 2025, with more than 65% of the victims being motorcyclists, underscoring the need for targeted measures.

Among the actions announced were new technical regulations for certified motorcycle helmets and the implementation of the “One Motorcycle, One Helmet” initiative, which seeks to ensure that every motorcycle sold in the country includes an approved helmet that meets international safety standards.

Morrison also highlighted the National Pact for Road Safety, promoted by President Luis Abinader and signed by 121 public and private institutions, as well as the National Road Safety Plan 2025-2030, designed to coordinate efforts to reduce road crashes.

In addition, he noted that the government, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, aims to train 300,000 high school students in road safety by 2028 through a nationwide virtual education program.

The Intrant chief also pointed to a US$200 million Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) program focused on improving road infrastructure and enhancing safety conditions across the national highway network.

Morrison concluded by emphasizing that road safety requires the participation of governments, businesses, academic institutions, and society as a whole, reaffirming the Dominican Republic’s commitment to placing the protection of life at the center of public policy.
