The Government announces that construction of the Amber Highway will begin next month
Santo Domingo — Vice President Raquel Peña announced this Saturday that construction of the Amber Highway is scheduled to begin next month . This infrastructure project will connect the provinces of Santiago and Puerto Plata in less than 30 minutes and aims to boost tourism, commerce, logistics, and economic development in the northern region .
Peña provided the information to the press at the conclusion of an expanded working session of the Association of Merchants and Industrialists of Santiago ( ACIS ), in which allied institutions, representatives of the Cibao provinces and the Minister of Public Works and Communications (MOPC), Eduardo Estrella , among others, participated .
Raquel Peña stated that the project will bring numerous benefits, growth, and development to the 14 provinces of the Northern region . “We are very pleased with the start of this project,” she said.
Contract signing
The Minister of Public Works and Communications , Eduardo Estrella , assured that the Amber Highway is in the stage of ” signing contracts ” and socialization with the companies awarded the bidding process.
At the beginning of July, the Amber Highway Consortium , SRL, made up of the companies Ingeniería Estrella , Rizek Constructora, Magna and Constructora Mar, won the bid for the design and construction of the Amber Highway , called by the RD Vial Trust .
The vice president highlighted that Santiago and the Cibao region are experiencing a period of significant economic and urban growth , which has increased the demand for new infrastructure to meet the population’s mobility, connectivity, and development needs.
The official also thanked the business sector for its support of the project and assured that the Government is promoting solutions aimed at supporting the region’s growth through the construction and expansion of roads , bridges, and other strategic works.
The meeting, held at the ACIS facilities , was organized in response to concerns raised by regional leaders during a working meeting held last week in the Vice President’s office at the National Palace .
During the event, Estrella also presented an overview of the main infrastructure projects the government is developing in Santiago and the northern region . She emphasized that these investments aim to improve connectivity, strengthen road safety, and increase the competitiveness of the Cibao region.
Among the priority projects he mentioned:
- The expansion to four lanes of the Navarrete ring road .
- The expansion of the Santiago-Licey highway .
- Road connection works towards Moca and other locations.
Regarding the paving programs , he indicated that the Ministry of Public Works and Communications has brigades working simultaneously in Santiago , Puerto Plata, San Francisco de Macorís and other provinces.
He explained that, due to budgetary limitations and the increase in the cost of materials , the interventions are carried out following technical and priority criteria , with the purpose of addressing the needs of the entire country in a balanced way.
On the other hand, the president of ACIS , Marcos Santana , considered that the presence of representatives from the main productive , commercial, industrial and service sectors of the North region demonstrates the interest of the business community and organized society in working in an articulated manner with the Government to promote initiatives that contribute to the development of the Cibao.
