Dominican Republic sets new electricity demand record for second straight day

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s electricity demand reached a new all-time high Tuesday night, with the National Interconnected Electric System (SENI) recording an instantaneous peak of 4,277 megawatts (MW) at 8:36 p.m., according to Energy and Mines Minister Joel Santos.

The new record exceeded Monday’s peak of 4,203 MW by 74 MW, marking the second consecutive day the country has set a historic demand record. Monday’s figure had already surpassed the previous high of 4,185.11 MW, recorded on July 22.

In a post on X, Santos said the sustained rise in electricity consumption reflects continued growth in national demand. He attributed the trend to high summer temperatures, expanding economic activity, and increased electrification of homes and productive sectors.

The minister added that electricity demand is expected to continue climbing in the coming weeks as seasonal consumption remains elevated.
