Dominican Agriculture Ministry and Indomet partner to strengthen climate resilience

Santo Domingo.- The Ministry of Agriculture and the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) have signed a cooperation agreement to improve climate risk management, strengthen agricultural planning, and provide farmers with timely weather information.

The agreement, signed by Agriculture Minister Francisco Oliverio Espaillat Bencosme and Indomet Director Gloria Ceballos, aims to integrate meteorological and hydrological data into agricultural decision-making to help producers adapt to climate variability.

A key component of the partnership is the expansion of Agroclimatic Roundtables, which bring together meteorologists, agricultural experts, extension agents, and farmers to analyze weather forecasts, assess potential impacts on crops, and develop region-specific farming recommendations.

The initiative also includes the publication of specialized agroclimatic bulletins, ongoing training for farmers and agricultural technicians, the exchange of technical and scientific information, and support for public policies that promote a more resilient agricultural sector.

Authorities said the agreement will help reduce losses caused by droughts, heavy rainfall, extreme temperatures, and other climate-related events while strengthening food security and promoting more sustainable farming practices in the Dominican Republic.
