New statue of Saint Dominic of Guzmán unveiled in Colonial City

Santo Domingo.- A sculpture of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, founder of the Order of Preachers, was inaugurated August 5 at Plaza del Convento, next to the historic Dominican Convent in Santo Domingo’s Colonial City.

The initiative was promoted by Dominican Sister Rosa Monique Peña as a permanent tribute to the saint and his historical connection to the city. The sculpture, created by renowned Dominican artist Dustin Muñoz, depicts Saint Dominic preaching with open arms as he welcomes visitors to the centuries-old convent that bears his name.

During the ceremony, National District Mayor Carolina Mejía highlighted the Dominican Friars’ contribution to the spiritual, educational and cultural development of the city and the country. Friar José Alberto Hidalgo, parish priest of the Dominican Convent, emphasized Saint Dominic’s commitment to study, dialogue and the pursuit of truth.

Special recognition was given to Rosa Margarita Bonetti for her generosity in making the sculpture possible. The new work adds to the cultural heritage of the Colonial City and honors the enduring influence of Saint Dominic and the Order of Preachers on Santo Domingo’s history and identity.

The ceremony was attended by U.S. Ambassador Leah Francis Campos, business leaders, Dominican friars, lay Dominicans and representatives of other religious congregations.
