U.S. Embassy in Dominican Republic ranks second worldwide for immigrant visa processing

Santo Domingo.- The U.S. Embassy in the Dominican Republic has established itself as the second-largest U.S. consular mission in the world for immigrant visa processing, reflecting the significant volume of Dominican migration to the United States.

The embassy processes more than 50,000 immigrant visas each year, surpassed only by the U.S. Consulate in Mexico. Santo Domingo ranks ahead of other high-volume locations such as Manila, Mumbai, and Ho Chi Minh City.

The high demand is largely driven by the Dominican community in the United States, which numbers more than two million people. Family reunification accounts for most immigrant visa applications, including petitions involving spouses, children, parents, and siblings.

The embassy’s high volume of immigration cases was also a factor in the Dominican Republic being selected to host a pilot program that could require certain immigrant visa applicants to post a bond if consular officers determine they may become a public charge to the U.S. government.

New York remains the main destination for Dominicans who immigrate legally to the United States, particularly in areas such as Washington Heights, Inwood, and the Bronx. The Dominican population has also grown significantly in New Jersey, Florida, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, with increasing numbers in states such as Georgia and North Carolina.

Although the U.S. State Department does not publish an official global ranking of consulates by immigrant visa volume, available data and statements from the embassy place Mexico first and the Dominican Republic second, highlighting the strategic importance of Santo Domingo within the U.S. immigration system.
