Asonahores: More than 90% of hotel workers in Dominican Republic are Dominican

Santo Domingo.- More than 90% of hotel workers in the Dominican Republic are Dominican, according to Aguie Lendor, executive vice president of the Association of Hotels and Tourism (Asonahores), who emphasized the tourism industry’s contribution to employment and the broader economy.

Lendor said Dominican workers hold positions across the hotel industry, including both operational and management roles, while responding to criticism over the hiring of foreign workers in tourism destinations.

Tourism drives jobs and economic activity

Tourism currently generates more than 800,000 direct, indirect, and induced jobs in the Dominican Republic, according to Asonahores executive vice president Aguie Lendor. She also said the sector’s Social Security contributions increased by about 18%, reaching nearly RD$11 billion.

Lendor noted that tourism businesses continue to seek workers for various positions, including electricians, plumbers, and other technical roles. Asonahores operates a job bank to connect job seekers with tourism establishments.

Beyond employment, tourism generated approximately RD$220 billion in local purchases and economic activity in 2025. More than 80% of the products consumed by hotels are purchased locally, benefiting restaurants, transportation providers, tour guides, suppliers, and other Dominican businesses.
