Aerodom advances AILA modernization with new automated baggage system

Santo Domingo.- Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom) has put into operation the first phase of a new Automated Baggage Handling System (BHS) at Las Américas International Airport (AILA), as part of an investment exceeding RD$900 million.

The first phase, which has been operational since June, covers the southern area of the terminal. Work is continuing in the northern section and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

According to Aerodom, the new system will improve the security, efficiency and reliability of the outbound baggage process, from check-in to aircraft loading, while allowing construction to proceed without disrupting airport operations.

The project includes new computed tomography (CT) baggage screening equipment, a SCADA monitoring and control system, automated sorters and 360-degree baggage label readers.

Once fully operational, the system is expected to double AILA’s hourly baggage processing capacity, increase automation and provide greater operational redundancy between terminals and baggage carousels.

Aerodom, part of the Vinci Airports network, said the modernization will also strengthen preventive maintenance and the availability of spare parts, improving the airport’s operational reliability and continuity.
