Cuba condemns Dominican Republic’s expulsion of Cuban diplomats

Havana, Cuba.- The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the Dominican Republic’s decision to expel 9 Cuban diplomatic officials and their families, arguing that the measure has no justification.

Havana said its diplomats have always complied with the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and respected Dominican laws. It attributed the decision to what it described as pressure from the United States as part of efforts to isolate Cuba diplomatically.

The Cuban government cited the Dominican Republic’s exclusion of Cuba from the postponed Summit of the Americas and its change in position on a Cuban-backed UN resolution against the U.S. embargo as examples of what it called an alignment with Washington’s policy toward Havana.

Cuba warned that the expulsions could significantly damage bilateral relations but said they would not break the historic ties between the Cuban and Dominican peoples, highlighting their shared history, culture, economic links and solidarity.

“The Dominican people can always count on the unwavering friendship and solidarity of the Cuban people,” the statement said.
