Asonahores calls for sargassum solutions that benefit tourism

Santo Domingo.- Asonahores Executive Vice President Aguie Lendor said any strategy to address the growing sargassum problem along the Dominican Republic’s coasts should benefit both the tourism industry and local communities.

Lendor warned that significant amounts of sargassum are expected to reach Dominican shores during 2026, making it necessary to continue evaluating measures to reduce its impact on beaches and coastal areas.

Speaking on El Despertador, she noted that several hotels have already implemented containment measures, including double barriers designed to prevent large quantities of the seaweed from reaching beaches used by tourists.

Lendor also said a government cabinet is evaluating possible solutions to manage sargassum along the country’s coastline. She stressed that any measures adopted should balance the needs of the tourism sector with the well-being of communities and the broader population.
