Punta Cana Airport introduces AI technology to detect smuggling
Punta Cana.- Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) has implemented an artificial intelligence platform from SeeTrue to strengthen the detection of drugs and undeclared currency at passenger checkpoints.
The technology, integrated with Leidos’ ClearScan CT baggage scanners, uses AI to analyze images in real time and help security personnel identify concealed contraband and undeclared cash inside luggage without slowing normal passenger processing.
The airport said the modernization project, carried out with Leidos and its local partner PBS Group, is designed to improve security, efficiency and passenger-processing capacity as international traffic continues to grow.
According to SeeTrue, the implementation marks the first use of its AI algorithms with ClearScan CT technology at an international airport to specifically enhance the detection of drugs and undeclared currency.
The initiative further strengthens PUJ’s position as a regional leader in airport security and innovation. The airport was recently recognized as the Best Airport in Central America and the Caribbean at the 2026 World Airport Awards.
