Magnitude 6.7 earthquake strikes southern Peru

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck southern Peru on Thursday, shaking several regions of the country, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The earthquake occurred at around 6:00 p.m. GMT, with its epicenter in Parinacochas province, in the Ayacucho region, about 791 kilometers east of Lima. The USGS reported a depth of approximately 66.6 kilometers.

No deaths, injuries or significant damage had been reported in the initial reports following the earthquake.

Peru earthquake magnitude

The Geophysical Institute of Peru recorded a higher magnitude of 7.2 and estimated the earthquake’s depth at approximately 108 kilometers.

The earthquake was strong enough to be felt across parts of southern Peru, although its relatively deep epicenter may have reduced the impact at the surface.
