Punta Cana roundabout will be replaced by an overpass

Punta Cana.- The Punta Cana roundabout will be replaced by an overpass under the Dominican Republic’s National Road Safety Policy Implementation Program, a project financed by a US$200 million loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

The planned transformation is part of the government’s broader effort to improve road safety, reduce congestion and modernize high-risk transportation corridors across the country.

The project is outlined in Saving Lives: The Great Bet on Road Safety in the Dominican Republic, a document prepared by former INTRANT director Milton Morrison. Of the IDB financing, US$139 million will be executed by the Ministry of Public Works (MOPC) on road safety projects along corridors identified as high risk.

Overpass to improve traffic flow in Punta Cana

The existing Punta Cana roundabout serves as a key traffic distributor in one of the Dominican Republic’s busiest tourist areas. It connects the Coral Highway with Bávaro, Punta Cana, Cap Cana and Punta Cana International Airport.

The planned overpass is designed to eliminate at-grade crossings and allow long-distance traffic to move more continuously through the area. Local traffic would be handled through service roads, U-turns and controlled access points.

The project is expected to improve mobility and reduce conflict points at one of the region’s most important road intersections.

No construction date announced yet

Although the replacement of the Punta Cana roundabout is included in the road safety program, authorities have not announced a start date for construction.

The project forms part of a broader package of infrastructure investments aimed at reducing traffic risks and improving road safety on the Dominican Republic’s high-risk corridors.
