UN Security Council to hold emergency meeting on Haiti after Kenscoff massacre

New York.- The United Nations Security Council will hold an emergency meeting this Friday to address the worsening security and humanitarian crisis in Haiti, following a massacre in Kenscoff that left 47 people dead.

The meeting, scheduled for 3:00 p.m., will examine the latest developments in the country and possible measures to confront escalating gang violence as Haiti prepares for elections in the coming months.

The attack took place early Monday in Kenscoff, a mountainous community southeast of Port-au-Prince, when armed gangs raided a camp for displaced people located on church grounds. The United Nations reported that 47 people were killed, while dozens were taken hostage and more than 2,600 residents were forced to flee.

Haiti’s National Police announced an immediate investigation into the massacre amid criticism over the lack of police presence in the area. Authorities have pledged a firm response and said efforts are underway to restore security.

Acting National Police Director General Vladimir Paraison defended the force’s response, saying security checkpoints remain operational and equipped with armored vehicles and officers. Justice and Public Security Minister Patrick Pélissier also convened a strategic meeting to address the security situation.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the Organization of American States (OAS) have condemned the Kenscoff attack, as international pressure grows for stronger measures to confront Haiti’s worsening security crisis.
