Este Festival 2026 opens in Higüey with celebration of eastern Dominican culture
Higüey.- Culture Minister Roberto Ángel Salcedo inaugurated Este Festival 2026, a cultural event taking place from August 28 to 30 at the Higüey campus of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD).
The festival seeks to showcase the art, traditions, heritage, and cultural identity of the six provinces in the Dominican Republic’s eastern region: El Seibo, Hato Mayor, La Altagracia, La Romana, Monte Plata, and San Pedro de Macorís.
During the opening ceremony, Salcedo highlighted the event’s role in promoting cultural decentralization and creating a space where communities can showcase their diverse cultural expressions.
The minister also received the Coat of Arms of Villa Salvaleón de Higüey, presented by the municipality in recognition of his work promoting and strengthening Dominican culture.
The opening program featured a performance by the Sueño Musical Children’s Choir and a promotional presentation highlighting the festival’s activities, including artistic performances and a showcase of regional gastronomy.
Dedicated to artisan Genaro “Cayuco” Reyes, Este Festival 2026 brings together artists, cultural organizations, authorities, and community representatives to celebrate the region’s cultural diversity and strengthen the connection between culture, communities, and territory.
