Trans couple legally marries in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Jayden Resto Holguín and Regina Balaguer de Resto, known as “Reina de Coronas,” legally formalized their marriage before the Central Electoral Board (JCE), which they describe as the first publicly registered marriage in the Dominican Republic between a trans man and a trans woman under their respective gender identities.

The couple said their relationship began through social media, followed by four months of long-distance communication before meeting in person. After two years together, they decided to marry in May 2026 and began the process of obtaining legal recognition of their union.

According to Regina, the process was marked by difficulties and alleged discrimination based on their appearance. She said they were repeatedly referred from one office to another and faced what she described as transphobic treatment while attempting to complete the required procedures.

The couple received support and guidance from TRANSSA – Trans Siempre Amigas and the Human Rights Observatory for Trans People (ODHPT). Both organizations congratulated them, highlighting the marriage as an important development for the visibility and recognition of trans families and their rights. COLESDOM also celebrated the union as a first of its kind in the country.

Despite the difficulties encountered during the process, Regina said the civil official who performed the ceremony treated them respectfully.

For the couple, the legal recognition of their marriage represents more than a personal milestone. They view it as a significant step for the Dominican trans community and an opportunity to continue advocating for rights they say remain denied to LGBTQ+ people.

“This is the beginning,” Regina said, expressing her determination to continue working for greater recognition and equality.
