Dominican Republic and Haiti advance dialogue on migration, trade and border security

Santo Domingo.- Foreign ministers Víctor “Ito” Bisonó of the Dominican Republic and Raina Forbin of Haiti led a working meeting Thursday in Dajabón, where delegations from both countries reviewed key issues affecting bilateral relations.

The talks focused on migration and legal cooperation, bilateral trade, air connectivity, economic cooperation and border coordination, with both sides seeking to maintain direct and constructive dialogue while respecting each country’s sovereignty.

Among the issues discussed were border security, efforts to combat illicit economies, migration management, the formalization of trade and investment, and expanding air connections between the two nations.

The delegations also stressed the importance of continued international support for Haiti’s Gang Suppression Force (GSF), particularly through the United Nations Security Council. Both countries agreed to continue diplomatic efforts aimed at ensuring the force’s full deployment and the renewal of its mandate, which they consider essential to helping Haitian authorities restore security and strengthen institutions.

The two governments also expressed their intention to resume Dominican consular operations in Haiti as soon as security conditions allow them to function normally.

Following the official meeting, Bisonó and Forbin met with business leaders from both countries to discuss expanding productive activities, creating jobs and strengthening economic ties. The participants highlighted the private sector’s role in promoting closer relations and greater economic cooperation between the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
