U.S. Ambassador Leah Campos praises Dominican Republic’s Christian identity

Santo Domingo.- U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic Leah Campos praised the country’s strong connection to the Christian faith, describing the Dominican Republic as a regional example for maintaining its cultural and religious identity despite pressure from international organizations and major powers.

“I feel that the Dominican Republic is the model in the region,” Campos said, highlighting what she described as a population that remains vocal about its faith and religious values.

The ambassador expressed hope that Dominicans would preserve what she considers key elements of their national identity, including their Christian devotion. She also praised the country for maintaining criminal penalties related to abortion, describing the policy as a “victory for God.”

Campos further criticized the promotion of gender ideology in other countries, arguing that it could weaken the role of the family and religious institutions while increasing the role of the state. Her comments came during an interview that explored the relationship between faith, culture, family, democracy, and public life.

The diplomat also spoke about her experiences with different Christian communities during her time in the Dominican Republic. She highlighted the openness with which many Dominicans discuss God, including people who are not actively practicing their faith.

“I am observing and benefiting from your dedication to your values,” Campos said.

The interview also touched on renewed interest among young people in the United States in traditional religious practices and the role of faith in contemporary society.

Campos made the remarks during an appearance on Living with Faith, described as the Dominican Republic’s first Christian podcast.
