Trump posts map depicting Dominican Republic under U.S. flag

U.S. President Donald Trump shared a map on Truth Social showing the Dominican Republic and other Caribbean countries under the red and white stripes of the American flag, alongside Mexico, Canada, Greenland and Iceland.

Trump posted the image Monday without a caption or explanation. The Dominican Republic is clearly included in the Caribbean area covered by the U.S. flag, drawing attention to the island nation amid Trump’s broader expansionist rhetoric during his second term.

The map appeared hours after Trump suggested on Truth Social that the U.S. state of New Mexico should be renamed “New America,” continuing his push to rename geographic locations, including the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”

The origin of the map is unclear. Trump frequently shares memes and images produced by supporters or generated with artificial intelligence, and there was no indication that the image represented an official U.S. government proposal.

A map without a message or context

The post comes amid Trump’s repeated comments regarding Greenland and Canada and his refusal to rule out military intervention in Cuba. His territorial statements have generated reactions from governments in the region and beyond.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, without directly mentioning Trump’s map, said Monday that Mexican territory “is not and will not be a colony or protectorate of any foreign country.”

The map was also shared days after Trump signed an executive order seeking to rename Lake Ontario, which forms part of the U.S.-Canada border, as “Lake America.”

While the inclusion of the Dominican Republic and other Caribbean territories in the image has attracted attention, Trump offered no explanation for their depiction and has not announced any policy seeking to incorporate those countries into the United States.
