Dominican Republic expands air connectivity with Canada ahead of winter season

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic is expanding air connectivity with Canada, one of the strongest-performing international markets at airports managed by Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom), part of the Vinci Airports network.

According to Aerodom, Canadian passenger traffic has increased 13% at Gregorio Luperón International Airport in Puerto Plata and 62% at Presidente Juan Bosch International Airport in Samaná so far in 2026 compared with the same period in 2025.

The growth is being supported by increased seat capacity for the 2026-2027 winter season, as airlines respond to rising demand and expand travel options between Canada and the Dominican Republic.

New routes and more flights

At Las Américas International Airport in Santo Domingo, Air Canada will launch a new route between Montreal and Santo Domingo in December 2026, operating two flights per week.

Puerto Plata is also expected to see increased capacity from Canada, with Aerodom projecting a 20% increase in available seats for the upcoming winter season. Air Transat currently leads the market with approximately 153,000 passengers, followed by WestJet with more than 113,000. Air Canada has recorded 22% growth in passenger traffic.

Two additional routes will further expand connectivity with Puerto Plata. Air Transat will begin weekly flights from London, Ontario, in December, while WestJet will launch a weekly route from Winnipeg.

In Samaná, Canadian traffic has risen 62% compared with 2025. Aerodom expects seat capacity from Canada to increase by approximately 39% during the 2026-2027 winter season.

Air Transat currently carries about 44,000 passengers to Samaná, followed by WestJet with nearly 31,000 and Air Canada with approximately 19,000. Air Canada’s traffic has increased 17% compared with 2025.
