Dominican Chamber of Deputies approves mandatory morality and civics education
Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic’s Chamber of Deputies approved Tuesday, in second reading, a bill that would make Morality and Civics a mandatory subject throughout the country’s pre-university education system.
The bill, which must now be considered by the Senate, seeks to ensure that civic education has a permanent place in the classroom, with emphasis on the Constitution, human rights and national symbols.
It also aims to promote a culture of peace, social coexistence, democratic participation and responsible citizenship.
If approved by the Senate and enacted into law, Morality and Civics would become a mandatory component of the national education system rather than depending on individual initiatives by schools.
The measure seeks to strengthen students’ overall education by complementing academic instruction with knowledge of their rights, duties and responsibilities as citizens.

There is a famous saying often attributed to the Greek philosopher Aristotle or St. Ignatius Loyola that says, “Give me a child until he is 7, and I will show you the man”.
Nothing is mentioned here indicating at what age this subject will be introduced, but if “pre-university education system” means the secondary education level, it will be too late.
