Tourism, among the sectors with the lowest employee turnover in the Dominican Republic

In a business ecosystem where job turnover is becoming increasingly common among younger generations, technology and tourism companies are showing better staff retention in the Dominican Republic.

Natalia Vásquez, country manager of anpowerGroup in the Dominican Republic, stated that in companies linked to the tourism sector, an industry with high production linkages and key to attracting foreign investment – ​​and therefore new job opportunities – the turnover rate ranges between 25% and 30%.

“As projects develop, both in the south and in the case of Punta Bergantín in Puerto Plata, we will see how we will have less migration to the city, because talent will be finding opportunities in their own communities and that is where we truly generate value as employers,” he observed.

He noted that the tourism value chain extends far beyond those who work in hotels and includes everyone who works within the food and beverage, transportation, cleaning, and many other service industries, according to Diario Libre.

Worker mobility poses a challenge for companies, especially in the Dominican Republic, where the informality rate remains high, at 54.1% in the first quarter of 2026, according to the Central Bank of the Dominican Republic (BCRD).

Vásquez noted that, of the 5.2 million employed people, only 2.5 million have formal jobs, with critical sectors such as agriculture and construction (where only 12% and 15% of jobs are formal, respectively) and others that, on the contrary, have high levels of regulated employment, such as industries (70%) and teaching (96%).
