Pedernales to get three new weather stations to strengthen early warnings
Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Mining Company (Emidom) and the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) signed an interinstitutional agreement to install three automatic weather stations in Pedernales, aimed at strengthening climate monitoring and early warning systems in the province.
The stations will be installed within the Ávila Mining Fiscal Reserve (RFMA) and will collect data on temperature, rainfall, wind and other atmospheric conditions. The equipment will operate under World Meteorological Organization (WMO) standards.
The information will support Emidom’s environmental studies, particularly its assessment of water resources in the area, while also being shared with Indomet for validation and incorporation into the National Meteorological Data Bank (Bandamet).
Emidom Executive Vice President Miguel Ángel Díaz said the initiative will provide Pedernales with scientific infrastructure in an area that has historically had limited meteorological monitoring.
He added that the stations will serve not only environmental research but also local authorities, farmers, fishermen and communities, particularly during hurricane season.
Indomet Executive Director Gloria Ceballos said expanding the country’s meteorological observation network through partnerships such as this one will improve weather monitoring, early warnings and risk management in Pedernales.
Under the agreement, Emidom will install and calibrate the stations, share the collected data and support site verification, while Indomet will provide technical assistance, staff training, data validation and oversight of preventive maintenance in accordance with WMO protocols.
The agreement forms part of Emidom’s work in Pedernales to establish an environmental baseline for its strategic mineral exploration activities, while the company said it seeks to strengthen its commitments to environmental protection, transparency and sustainable development in the communities where it operates.
