Dominican Republic faces extreme heat with temperatures above 37°C

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic is facing several days of intense heat, with temperatures and heat indexes expected to exceed 37°C through September 22, according to forecasts from the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet).

Indomet said severe to extreme heat will affect the country, particularly the northwestern region, where temperatures above 37°C are expected for at least three consecutive days.

The conditions are linked to the warmer season, drier and more stable air, and the presence of Saharan dust over the weekend.

Regions facing the highest heat

According to the NOAA heat-risk forecast for September 16–22, the northwest faces a significant risk of extreme heat, while the central, eastern and southeastern regions could experience moderate to severe heat.

Temperatures and heat indexes in these areas are expected to range between 33°C and 37°C, potentially producing dangerous levels of heat stress.

Indomet urged people to take extra precautions, particularly pregnant women, children, older adults and people with underlying health conditions.

Residents are advised to:

• Drink water frequently.
• Wear light, loose-fitting clothing, preferably in light colors.
• Avoid direct sun exposure without protection between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
• Take precautions to protect pets from the heat.

Authorities recommend limiting prolonged outdoor activities during the hottest hours and staying hydrated as the period of intense heat continues.
