Dominican journalists examine Argentina’s growing role in tourism to Dominican Republic

Jujuy, Argentina.- Dominican journalists Cristina Rosario and Salvador Batista used an international tourism journalism conference in northern Argentina to examine how the country has emerged as one of the fastest-growing source markets for travel to Dominican Republic.

The two were featured speakers at the 18th International Congress of Journalists and Tourism Professionals, organized by the World Tourism Journalism Organization (OMPT) in Jujuy. Their presentation, titled “How Does a Tourism Market Change? The Argentina–Dominican Republic Case,” focused on the relationship between air connectivity, destination promotion and communications.

Argentina’s growth as a source of visitors has been substantial. Tourist arrivals from the country increased from 189,211 in 2019 to 450,501 in 2025, a 138% rise that placed Argentina third among Dominican Republic’s international source markets, according to figures presented at the conference.

The journalists argued that increased air service is only part of the equation. Their central message was that connectivity makes a destination accessible, while communication helps keep it in the traveler’s thoughts when it comes time to choose a vacation.

From air links to destination awareness

The presentation examined how the expansion of the Argentine market has coincided with greater visibility for Dominican Republic and stronger air connections between the two countries.

Rosario and Batista incorporated video interviews into their presentation, including comments from Dominican Tourism Minister David Collado on the importance of the Argentine market and remarks by José Gregorio Cabrera, Arajet’s vice president of communications and public relations, on the role of connectivity for the airline and the market.

They also showed a tourism campaign featuring Dominican singer Juan Luis Guerra, whose music accompanies images of destinations around the country. The campaign served as an example of how audiovisual storytelling can complement transportation links by keeping a destination visible to prospective travelers.

The session formed part of a broader program addressing tourism communications, culture, destinations and sustainability.

Interest extends beyond the numbers

Over 150 people attended the Jujuy congress, including journalists, tourism and communications professionals, students and other participants involved in the sector. The Dominican delegation also met with media professionals from across the region and spoke with students studying journalism and tourism.

The discussions provided an opportunity to look at Dominican Republic from the perspective of an increasingly important South American market, while also introducing students and professionals to the country’s tourism offering.

The congress was held under the theme “When Communicating a Destination Generates Real Travel” and was attended by Federico Posadas, Jujuy’s minister of culture and tourism. The provincial government declared the event to be of cultural and tourism interest.

The conference was part of an international press trip organized by OMPT and its founder, Miguel Ledhesma, that included activities in Buenos Aires and northern Argentina.
