Foreign Minister Bisonó highlights Haiti, trade and investment as Dominican priorities at UN General Assembly

New York.- The situation in Haiti, bilateral relations, trade, investment and export promotion are among the Dominican Republic’s priorities at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, Foreign Minister Víctor “Ito” Bisonó said.

Bisonó identified the renewal of international forces in Haiti as a key issue, noting that stability in the neighboring country is closely linked to security and employment.

As part of his bilateral agenda, Bisonó is scheduled to meet with Russia’s foreign minister to discuss Haiti and other issues. He also said the Dominican and Haitian foreign ministers recently discussed maintaining a coordinated position on the renewal of the international mission.

Regarding the United States, Bisonó highlighted its importance to the Dominican economy through remittances, tourism, exports and investment. He said both countries are discussing tariff-related issues to protect Dominican interests and improve conditions for national investments and exports.

After the UN General Assembly, Bisonó plans to travel to Washington, D.C., for meetings with representatives of the White House, State Department and Department of Energy.

The foreign minister also said the Foreign Ministry will take a more active role in promoting exports, attracting investment and supporting Dominican production, with ambassadors and consuls encouraged to identify business opportunities and promote Dominican products abroad.

Bisonó also cited dry ports along the border with Haiti as part of efforts to strengthen logistics and facilitate trade.
