Bisonó and Lavrov hold high-level talks on Haiti and Dominican-Russian relations

Dominican Foreign Minister Víctor “Ito” Bisonó met with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, in New York to discuss the situation in Haiti, bilateral economic ties, tourism and other issues of mutual interest.

The meeting took place during the High-Level Week of the 81st United Nations General Assembly, where Bisonó stressed the importance of keeping international attention focused on the Haitian crisis and supporting efforts to restore security and stability in the neighboring country.

Both officials discussed international security efforts in Haiti and the need for the UN Security Council to ensure the resources and personnel required to respond effectively to armed gangs.

Dominican concerns over job offers in Russia

Bisonó also raised concerns about reports of job offers targeting Dominican citizens to travel to Russia and their possible connection to activities related to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Lavrov instructed the department responsible for Russia’s relations with Latin America and the Caribbean to follow up on the issue and ensure that the Dominican Republic’s concerns reach the appropriate authorities. Both sides agreed to maintain communication on the matter.

The ministers also reviewed Dominican-Russian relations and discussed opportunities to revive economic and commercial exchanges affected by the current international environment.
