Dominican Republic looks to Guatemala for best practices in assisting returned migrants

Santo Domingo.- Geanilda Vásquez traveled to Guatemala on May 11 and 12 to study that country’s “Return to Home Plan,” a comprehensive program that provides humanitarian assistance and reintegration support to returning migrants.

Vásquez, who also serves as pro tempore president of the Central American Integration System, said the Dominican Republic is developing a national model for the reception and reintegration of returnees based on regional best practices. The initiative seeks to provide returned migrants with access to medical care, documentation, education, job placement, and psychosocial support.

During the visit, the Dominican delegation met with officials from the Guatemalan Migration Institute, the Secretariat for Central American Social Integration, and the International Organization for Migration. They toured reception and assistance centers in Guatemala to learn how institutions coordinate support for migrants from their return through long-term reintegration into their communities.
