Paliza highlights Dominican Republic’s strategic position to expand global trade

Santo Domingo.- Minister of the Presidency José Ignacio Paliza said the Dominican Republic’s geographic location offers a strategic opportunity to expand its role in global trade, but capitalizing on it will require stronger connectivity, infrastructure and logistics.

Speaking at the first Maritime Vision Forum 2026, Paliza noted that more than 65% of the country’s exports are transported by sea, while public and private investment in port infrastructure has exceeded US$531 million over the past five years.

He highlighted the potential of the ports of Haina and Caucedo, as well as opportunities involving Manzanillo, Barahona, San Pedro de Macorís and Puerto Plata. He also pointed to emerging digital and energy connections, including Google’s planned international digital exchange infrastructure and potential energy links with Puerto Rico.

Paliza said Decree 353-26, which calls for the development of a National Maritime Strategy, will help establish priorities for port infrastructure, navigation safety, environmental protection and international commitments.

He added that the strategy should include measurable goals, designated institutions responsible for implementation and mechanisms to monitor progress.

Paliza linked the initiative to Meta RD 2036, saying that achieving the goal of doubling the economy’s real size by 2036 will require moving goods more efficiently, reducing costs and strengthening connections with production centers and international markets.
