Dominican Republic withdraws embassy from Nicaragua

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican Republic announced its decision to withdraw its embassy in Nicaragua while conditions persist that affect freedoms and democratic principles in the country.

Foreign Minister Víctor “Ito” Bisonó made the announcement during the 31st Meeting of Consultation of Foreign Ministers of the Organization of American States (OAS) in Washington, D.C.

Diplomatic tensions

The decision comes amid deteriorating relations between Santo Domingo and Managua. In July, the Dominican government recalled its ambassador to Nicaragua for consultations, after which the Dominican diplomatic mission operated under an interim chargé d’affaires.

In September, Nicaragua announced the closure of its embassy in Santo Domingo. The Dominican Foreign Ministry confirmed the decision and said it would continue managing bilateral relations through established diplomatic channels.

The Dominican announcement came as the OAS held an emergency meeting focused on Nicaragua. The organization approved a resolution calling for the restoration of civic freedoms, the release of political prisoners, and conditions for free and transparent elections.

The government said the measure reflects its foreign policy commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law, emphasizing that defending democracy must translate into concrete actions. It also reaffirmed its willingness to support OAS efforts to protect democratic principles across the Americas.
