IDAC expands air navigation technology at Punta Cana Airport

Punta Cana International Airport will receive a new Instrument Landing System (ILS-DME) as part of the Dominican Institute of Civil Aviation’s (IDAC) ongoing air navigation modernization program.

IDAC Director General Igor Rodríguez presented the project during Dominican Week in the United States in Washington, highlighting investments to strengthen navigation, surveillance and air traffic control systems.

The ILS-DME will provide aircraft with more precise guidance during approaches and landings, particularly in low-visibility or adverse weather conditions. The project is intended to improve operational efficiency, enhance landing safety and reduce flight diversions.

According to IDAC’s Annual Procurement Plan, RD$150 million has been allocated for the supply, installation and commissioning of the system at Punta Cana Airport. A similar system is also planned for Las Américas International Airport (AILA).

Rodríguez also highlighted the country’s expanding weather-monitoring capabilities. The Dominican Republic now has three weather radars, including systems installed in Punta Cana, Puerto Plata and at the Dominican Aeronautical Complex.

The modernization program will also expand air surveillance. IDAC plans to install a system combining primary radar, secondary radar and ADS-B technology at Cibao International Airport by February 2027.

These investments are aimed at strengthening the infrastructure used by pilots and air traffic controllers while improving the country’s ability to monitor weather and air traffic and respond to conditions that could affect flight operations.
