Foreign Minister Álvarez defends U.S. agreement, says there is “nothing to hide”
Santo Domingo.- Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez defended the memorandum of understanding signed between the Dominican Republic and the United States, stressing that the agreement is fully transparent and contains “nothing to hide.” Speaking at a press conference at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Álvarez said the document is not an international treaty and therefore does not require approval from the National Congress or the Constitutional Court.
The minister explained that many memorandums of understanding are non-binding and are used to establish cooperation without creating legal obligations. He emphasized that the agreement can be terminated at any time and does not involve commitments significant enough to warrant legislative review.
Álvarez’s remarks come amid criticism from opposition lawmakers and political leaders who have requested more information about the accord, particularly regarding the possible reception of migrants deported from the United States. The foreign minister said the government released the agreement in a timely manner and stated he is willing to appear before Congress to provide further explanations if requested.
