Dominican Republic milestone: achieves record of more than 16,000 cruise passengers in one day
The Dominican Republic marked an important day for the cruise sector last Wednesday, September 30, as 16,287 travelers arrived on four ships, three in Puerto Plata and one in Pedernales.
The North Shore welcomed three impressive cruise ships simultaneously at the Amber Cove and Taíno Bay terminals. The vessels that docked were the Mardi Gras (5,835 passengers and 1,764 crew members), the Carnival Magic (3,858 passengers and 1,350 crew members), and the Resilient Lady (2,513 passengers and 1,182 crew members). In total, the port activity brought 12,206 visitors who came to enjoy the area’s attractions and amenities.
Meanwhile, and in line with the country’s port diversification strategy, the Freedom of the Seas arrived at Cabo Rojo, in the province of Pedernales. The vessel, which came from Willemstad, Curaçao, had 4,081 guests and 1,392 crew members on board, reaffirming the south’s potential and growth as a new development hub for the cruise industry.
Based on an estimated average consumption of $100 per visitor, the arrival is projected to generate an approximate economic impact of $1.6 million, boosting commerce, transportation, and local services in “The Bride of the Atlantic,” according to RCN.
The executive director of the Dominican Port Authority (APORDOM), Alejandro Campos, noted that with simultaneous arrivals in the North and South, the Dominican Republic continues to strengthen its port infrastructure and connectivity, showing it remains a top choice for the world’s leading cruise lines.
