Disney Cruise Line makes Dominican debut in Puerto Plata

Puerto Plata, DR.- Puerto Plata has added another major name to its cruise tourism portfolio with the arrival of Disney Cruise Line, as two of the company’s ships are making calls at Taíno Bay this month for the first time.

The Disney Dream is scheduled to call at the terminal with approximately 2,778 passengers, followed two days later by the Disney Destiny, which is expected to arrive with about 2,787 passengers. Together, the two calls are projected to bring more than 5,500 cruise passengers to Puerto Plata.

The Disney calls come as the Dominican Republic continues to strengthen its position in the Caribbean cruise market, with Puerto Plata at the center of that expansion.

According to figures from the Dominican Port Authority (APORDOM), 43 cruise ships are scheduled to call at the country’s three cruise terminals in October, bringing an estimated 173,983 passengers. Taíno Bay is expected to receive 20 of those ships and 77,171 passengers, while Amber Cove, also in Puerto Plata, is projected to handle 18 calls and 76,834 passengers. Cabo Rojo, in Pedernales, is scheduled for five calls and 19,978 passengers.

The figures underscore the importance of Puerto Plata to the country’s cruise industry, with its two terminals expected to receive nearly 89 percent of the month’s cruise passengers.

The growth has been evident throughout the year. From January through August, Taíno Bay received 800,680 cruise passengers, while Amber Cove welcomed 700,578, according to APORDOM figures. The port authority expects Taíno Bay alone to reach approximately 1.22 million passengers by the end of 2026.

At the national level, the Dominican Republic received 2.77 million cruise passengers aboard 922 ships in 2025. Cruise arrivals during the first two months of 2026 reached 745,179, an increase of 65,740 passengers compared with the same period in 2025, according to Central Bank data.

Disney Cruise Line’s arrival adds a distinctive family-oriented brand to Puerto Plata’s already diverse cruise market, which includes operators such as Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, MSC, Celebrity, Princess, Virgin and Holland America.

The Disney Dream, which entered service in 2011, can accommodate about 4,000 passengers, while the Disney Destiny, launched as part of Disney’s newer generation of ships, has a similar passenger capacity. Both offer experiences built around Disney characters and stories, with the Disney Destiny incorporating themes from Disney, Pixar and Marvel.

For Puerto Plata, the new calls offer another opportunity to expose cruise visitors to the destination’s attractions, businesses and cultural experiences. The challenge, as cruise traffic continues to grow, is to turn short visits into meaningful encounters that encourage travelers to return for longer stays.

Disney’s debut thus marks more than the arrival of two new ships. It expands the range of cruise brands calling at Puerto Plata and reinforces the city’s role as one of the Dominican Republic’s leading gateways for maritime tourism.
