ONDA reports record surge in copyright registrations in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- The National Copyright Office (National Copyright Office) reported a sharp increase in the number of works being registered by Dominican creators, reflecting growing awareness of the importance of protecting intellectual property. According to ONDA Director General José Ruben Gonell Cosme, the institution went from processing about 1,400 registrations per year to closing 2025 with nearly 34,000 protected works.

The upward trend continued in April 2026, when more than 19,000 works were registered in a single month. Gonell explained that copyright protection now extends far beyond music and books, covering more than 60 categories, including software, video games, recipes, and architectural designs. He said this legal protection has become an important economic asset for entrepreneurs and creators.

Gonell also highlighted the Dominican Republic’s removal from the U.S. Special 301 Watch List as a sign of improved legal certainty for investors. While praising the growth in registrations, he said more education is needed in sectors such as publishing and crafts, where many creators still fail to protect their work. ONDA continues to focus on education and mediation to combat piracy, while also preparing to address new challenges posed by artificial intelligence and digital platforms.
