Vaguada will maintain rains and storms in several provinces this Sunday

The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) reported that rain will continue in several provinces this Sunday due to a trough at several levels of the troposphere, combined with prevailing east/southeast winds and local effects.

The institution explained that scattered showers and local downpours are expected in the morning over the north, northeast, and southeast coasts, as well as the Central Cordillera.

He also pointed out that in the afternoon, locally moderate to heavy downpours are expected, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusts of wind, mainly in Monte Plata, the north of Santo Domingo, San Pedro de Macorís, La Romana, San Cristóbal, Santiago, Sánchez Ramírez, Hato Mayor, Hermanas Mirabal, Monseñor Nouel, San Juan and Elías Piña, among other nearby towns.

Given these conditions, the National Forecast Center of Indomet maintains a Meteorological Alert for Greater Santo Domingo and San Cristóbal, due to possible sudden urban and rural flooding.

Hot temperatures

As for temperatures, the agency indicated they will remain hot, with highs between 31 °C and 35 °C in much of the Dominican Republic.

For this reason, it recommends drinking enough fluids, wearing light, loose-fitting, light-colored clothing, avoiding direct sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. without proper protection, and staying in cool, ventilated places.

He also recalled that children, the elderly, and pregnant women are more vulnerable to high temperatures, so they need special attention.

Cyclone watch

Regarding cyclonic activity, Indomet reported that posttropical cyclone Isaias is about 105 kilometers southeast of Nashville, Tennessee, United States, with maximum sustained winds of 35 kilometers per hour. The system is moving northeast at about 37 kilometers per hour and, given its position and trajectory, poses no danger to the Dominican Republic.

Similarly, it reported that it is monitoring an unorganized area of downpours and thunderstorms associated with a low-pressure area, located about 160 kilometers southwest of the Cape Verde islands. This system has a 10% chance of cyclonic development in the next 48 hours and 20% in the next seven days.

Indomet urges the population to remain attentive to official weather information and to follow the guidelines of civil protection agencies.
