Public Health Ministry, Dentists’ College and ADTS promote medical and dental tourism

Santo Domingo.- Medical and dental tourism represents an opportunity for the Dominican Republic to attract investment, create specialized jobs, encourage technology adoption and improve healthcare services, industry representatives said during a national dental conference.

The issue was discussed during the “Health Tourism” panel at the 26th National and International Dentistry Congress (CONAOD XXVI), held as part of the 100th anniversary of the Dominican College of Dentists. The panel brought together representatives of the dental sector, the Dominican Association of Health Tourism and the Ministry of Public Health.

Participants highlighted the need to strengthen the country’s international reputation through verifiable quality, patient safety and public-private cooperation. They also stressed that growth in medical tourism could benefit related sectors such as hotels, transportation and other services while encouraging investment in healthcare infrastructure, training and equipment.

The panel emphasized compliance with national health regulations, including Ministry of Public Health licensing, as well as relevant international certifications and accreditations. The NORDOM ISO 22525:2020 standard on medical tourism was cited as a reference for improving the organization and quality of services for international patients.

Speakers also highlighted the importance of international patient departments capable of coordinating care before, during and after a patient’s trip. These units require bilingual and intercultural communication skills, informed consent procedures, proper documentation and protocols to prevent and manage complications.

Participants said the responsible development of medical and dental tourism could turn international demand into investment, specialized employment and stronger healthcare capabilities, benefiting both foreign patients and the Dominican population.
