Survivor Greece contestant seriously injured in boat accident in the Dominican Republic
Santo Domingo.- Dominican authorities have opened criminal proceedings against the captain of a tourist boat involved in the accident that seriously injured Stavros Floros, a 22-year-old contestant on Survivor Greece, during a spearfishing outing near Saona Island.
A closed-door hearing was scheduled Friday in Santo Domingo to determine whether the boat operator will remain in detention or be granted bail or house arrest while the investigation continues. Court documents classify the case as bodily harm under Article 309 of the Dominican Penal Code, and the pilot has been officially listed as under arrest.
Floros was injured while spearfishing during a break from filming the reality show. According to reports, he suffered a partial amputation of his lower left leg and severe trauma to his right leg after being struck by the vessel’s propellers. Production company AcunMedya said the incident occurred outside the competition and confirmed that Floros remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition and is no longer in immediate danger.
In comments to Greek media, Floros’ mother said her son remains optimistic despite his injuries, telling her, “Mom, why should I be sad? I’m alive.” She also said divers had placed surface marker buoys in the water, while his father stated it took about 40 minutes to get him to a hospital as he was suffering significant blood loss.
Following the accident, AcunMedya and Greek broadcaster SKAI TV announced the temporary suspension of Survivor Greece. SKAI said it will cover Floros’ medical treatment and rehabilitation while Dominican authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
